Who owes whom

How do couples track who paid for what?

A clean method for tracking shared expenses, who paid, who owes, and the final balance without keeping score.

Short answer

Track two facts separately: what the household spent, and who paid the money upfront. Then calculate the net balance instead of sending a payment request for every purchase.

Why this matters

This keeps the system from feeling transactional. One person can pay many fixed bills and still not be “spending more”; they are fronting money for shared costs.

How to handle it

  1. Record the total expense.
  2. Choose the shared category.
  3. Select who paid.
  4. Apply the agreed split rule.
  5. Settle the net balance at the chosen rhythm.

Watch out for this

Do not use “who paid” as a proxy for “who consumed.” Those are different facts.
