Fair split guide

Should couples split expenses 50/50 or by income?

There is no universal “fair” split for every couple. 50/50 is simple and works well when incomes are similar. A proportional split can be fairer when incomes differ because each person contributes according to their financial capacity.

50/50 is easiest when income and comfort levels are similar
Proportional splitting reduces unequal sacrifice when income differs
Many couples use one default rule plus a few category exceptions
01

The short answer

Use 50/50 if both partners earn similar amounts, have similar fixed obligations, and feel the arrangement is genuinely comfortable. Use a proportional split if equal payments leave one person with much less room for savings, debt, or personal needs.

02

The proportional formula

Add both net incomes, then divide each income by the household total. Apply those percentages to shared expenses.

  • Partner A earns $4,000 and Partner B earns $2,000
  • Household income is $6,000
  • A pays 66.7% and B pays 33.3% of shared expenses
03

When 50/50 works well

A 50/50 split is clear, fast, and emotionally neutral when both people have comparable income, comparable financial pressure, and similar use of the shared resources. It is also useful for one-off purchases where proportional math would create more friction than clarity.

04

When proportional works better

Proportional splitting helps when one partner earns significantly more, when rent was chosen around the higher earner’s budget, or when equal payments would make one person feel like they are subsidizing a lifestyle they cannot comfortably afford.

05

A mixed rule is often the most realistic

Many couples use proportional splitting for core household costs such as rent, utilities, groceries, and insurance, while keeping personal choices separate. Travel, gifts, children, pets, and subscriptions may each need their own explicit rule.

How Couplesplit helps

Couplesplit lets a couple set 50/50, fixed percentages, or an income-based default once, then adjust any individual expense. The important part is that both partners can see the rule, the amounts, and the final balance.
