How you split
Short answerThe How you split card shows, for this month, the share of shared costs each of you actually paid, the share you agreed to, and what a split by income would be. When a salary changes, the new percentages apply right away and your partner is notified.
If what you paid is within two points of what you agreed, the card simply says each of you paid your share. If not, it tells you how much the balance already makes up for it.
Add both monthly incomes and divide each one by the total. With incomes of 3,000 and 7,000, the split is 30/70: on a shared bill of 1,000, one of you pays 300 and the other 700. The calculator does the math with your numbers.
Each of you updates your own salary. The new split applies from that day, your partner gets a notification with the new percentages (never the salary amounts) and can pause the change to talk it over. Expenses already recorded keep the split they had.
Income is one factor. Debt, caregiving or savings goals can matter too. Couplesplit makes the rule visible; the two of you decide what fair means.
When incomes are very different, usually yes: each of you puts in the same share of what you earn, not the same amount. With similar incomes, 50/50 is simpler and just as fair.
The salaries used for the split are shared in the household so both of you can check the math. Salary change notifications show percentages only, never amounts.
